( CHARACTER INFORMATION )
- ★ NAME: Ciel Phantomhive
- ★ AGE: 13
- ★ CANON POINT:
- ★ CANON INFORMATION: Manga : Kuroshitsuji
- ★ PERSONALITY:
For his young age, Ciel is more mature and more together then perhaps, even a young adult-- or most. At most times he is distant, to the point of being almost stoic to nearly everyone in his life and around him. He does however on occasion when making business deals, display sly and devious undertones; coming off as rather dark and in a way, perhaps dangerous - though not in a real sort of threatening manner. Ciel doesn't really prefer the company of others (even at most times wanting to be apart from his butler, Sebastian, with whom is he quite bound to) unless it's for business, and more rarely so- a game of chess or cards(to which he is highly skilled in, often to the point of a flawless victory), and only he will initiate the game.
These few things alone are seen in just the first gathering of chapters, where you see many sides of Ciel's personality and yet both just enough, and not enough at all to really understand what he might be feeling. For instance, you see him engaging in many ways with Lizzy (his cousin, and also fiance), both a gentle yet annoying demeanor, as if he is merely putting up with her to keep her calm -- but he also wants to see her happy as well. You get a glimpse of this throughout the story; the soft spot that he holds for her because Lizzy in perhaps, the only connection he truly has to his old life, before the death of his parents and before his life changed forever. He will fight to keep her safe, in honor to someone he truly cares for and the life of the family line (knowing well enough however, that he will not live once his revenge is sought. This is a secret that Lizzy is never enlightened to.) The love and relationship that Ciel holds for this special girl is, in my opinion, one of the most important because it shows Ciel's honor and love for a girl that isn't just family but someone his heart is truly soft to, without a romantic note. It is a pure love that can hold annoyance and disdain as much as care- but still not enough to tell her his deadly secret that is eating his soul quite literally. He can be cold to her, turning her out before pulling her back with true care (this is not to be confused with any sort of manipulation or taunting.)Though not shown to many (as stated, Lizzy included-), there's no doubt that Ciel has great concern for those closest to him. However he still sees them, and everyone around him as a pawn in his own game, to lure those that killed his family, back to him for revenge. (This should be noted that he does not see them as precious only for pawns, there are some he genuinely loves and cares for as family, and close ties of bonding friendship, as well as pieces to a game.)
This same gentle and family loving boy can then turn, and make a business deal with his enemies, or people that might be working against the queen's wants, to get exactly what he wants, or what will get him what he needs for the queen- by making dark almost-threats, alluding to their danger should they proceed against him.
Ciel's thoughts and actions, and need to keep those at a distance, is due to the trauma he spent as an abused and tortured slave for months, as even three years later Ciel states that he finds it hard to smile with true happiness. It's stated and implied heavily that he cannot smile or be genuinely happy, because he carries the burden and memories of what happened to both his family and himself.
It is also because of the kidnapping and slavery incident and trauma, that he is always hesitant and hateful toward celebrating his birthday in any such way. To be reminded of his birthday is to be reminded of the painful incident which changed his life forever. He hides all of this though, with his hardened and cold exterior, stating "Something once lost, will never return."
It's very clear the heavy burdens that Ciel holds within him - however Ciel is still very much a child with a very childish mindset despite his hard work and efforts to come off, and be a mature lord of the Phantomhive estate, and Funtom candy and sweets business. In many ways, he fully believes things should be handed to him and cannot completely empathize with others and states that he would never want to. He'll push away if he doesn't understand, and is unrelenting in letting feelings show, even to the one closest to him; Sebastian (though this could be because he knows of what Sebastian truly is, and why he is with him). However despite all of this, it's worth to repeat that he cares deeply for those close to him, more so then he'd ever admit; and would likely do anything to keep them from harm.
Another good (and in a light, almost amusing) example of this is seen quite often, when Ciel has many small tantrums when being taunted by Sebastian, for whatever reason; usually from being denied something that he wants, or simply not getting his way. While Sebastian has his own agenda for Ciel, it is his job to be and act according; as Ciel's butler - devoted and proud. When he 'slips' even a little, Ciel can be seen as fussy and childlike, demanding Sebastian listen to him and do as he says without question, and sees little that should be bent on his end. It's easy to say he would rather stomp his feet (in the hypothetical sense here) and demand his way, then work with others (when he is not expected to, or when it is not business related) to come to a compromise. He would even go to such lengths, as to hide the fact of his asthma (and other illnesses such as colds and fevers) from his butler, to be strong and to not be seen as weak. Ciel's condition is very serious however, and not a light care of, in the least. Hiding these proves that he is determined not to be seen as someone who can be taken down by something so small, because someone with weaknesses, is better off dead.
Ciel also believes that due to what he has been through, and because he refuses to show any emotion, he can do anything , and would be willing to go to even dangerous and reckless lengths to do that. This is seen again, often (if not ALL throughout the story, through everything Ciel does) literally in almost every chapter. From going after mysterious and potential murders, to corrupt gangs and barons, to an unknown 'mystical' circus. Everything that Ciel does from chapter to chapter is a very outlandish and dangerous and he puts himself into a compromising life threatening situation every time he leaves his home. If it was not for Sebastian, Ciel would have been dead before he even left his first captor.
It's a very childish or immature way to think, and shows that just because he has been through a lot, much more than even an adult would, he does not necessarily know a lot about the world, or how to deal with more than a handful of tough situations (especially without his butler). He is shown constantly relying on Sebastian to handle almost all his situations, needing him to help him out at every turn. This is not to say Ciel is a coward or cannot hep himself, but he simply cannot handle the situations he pushes himself into, but so boldly believes that because of his powerful contract with Sebastian, he is completely able to come out clean. He would go so far as to even keep from telling Sebastian about his asthma, which made him very ill as a (even younger) child because it was seen as such a great weakness to him.
Most importantly, in my opinion, it is very hard to say one couldn't believe that somewhere within that tortured and tired young soul, that Ciel had a soft heart. He is after all, a small human child. The fact that Sebastian knew to take the form and appearance of the boy's father was a smart one, knowing that he would be comforted by this. By using this appearance when he could take on the vision of anything, he could most likely bring the utmost trust and comfort out from Ciel- proving that while he blocks off his own right to feel anything dealing with emotions for his lost family and the life he had, he misses them dearly, and is still pained by the loss of everything he once had. All of this is also shown in many moments of Ciel's nightmares or passing thoughts, when his mind would drift to these times, reminding him in ways yet again, to remain hard and cold- and push the gentle child away from existing (perhaps, to protect himself from being hurt?).
Despite all of the hiding, all of the repressing of what was and the denial , there have been times however, that Ciel has shown to be scared, frightened, and down right sickened by the actions of others. Remorseful and even though he covers it up by saying he is not of kind heart, it shows in many ways that Ciel does this, to guard himself and others - to keep those around him that he loves alive as long as he can, and keep them safe. There are times when, in the manga Ciel is faced by intruders in his own estate, or predators on the streets; men that want to hurt him or innocent women- to take what is his. Whether they are acting in ways that threaten his namesake, or acting in perverse and lewd insinuations to the well being of others, Ciel swears and states he will take them out, to make sure people like them never threaten or harm again. He see the good in the innocent, and because of his own trauma, knows what the pain is like. He knows how it is lost, and does not in his best heart, want that pain for anyone. He wants the pain and suffering to go to those that deserve it, not to those that are caught in it.
However.. more and if not most unfortunately though, it becomes clear that the more Ciel sacrifices his sanity and so- called "purity, the more he is slowly darkening his own soul, and becoming one of the damned himself. It's starting to show as if he was almost becoming as demonic as the mysterious butler himself who serves him. My favorite example, and without a doubt the most defining, is after- or at the end of the Circus ark, when Ciel and Sebastian unlock the secrets behind the Baron Kelvin, a long and twisted story that goes back to Ciel's childhood, and his kidnapping and near sacrifice. He learns that Kelvin has sense been obsessed with the boy, and after learning how badly he wanted to be a part of Ciel's sacrifice, Ciel shoots him. While this sounds perfectly reasonable (and justifiably so), the baron had been keeping his basement as almost a sort of sanctuary. It was found there, that there were cages of children, all being kept as Ciel had been years before.
All of this, and the events that follow, leave Ciel distraught, triggered, and very broken. He screams and becomes violently ill, and it's here that Sebastian is seen (gently, almost) tending to him, as he takes the patch from the child's eye to reveal his contract seal and tells him to kill the ones responsible-- and then orders him sternly to burn the place to the ground, killing even the innocent children inside the cages. Ciel fails to even care that the queen had ordered the safe return of the children, wanting only it all to be gone. He wanted nothing more, not caring in the slightest for anything, but for it all to end. For his torture to end no matter what- even if it meant taking the lives of many innocent and clueless beings caught in the crossfire.
It's now known and growing in fact that Ciel is more than willing to sacrifice his own soul for anything that will ensure his safety all to reach his personal goals, and what would the boy really have to lose? Either way, he has signed his soul over by contract, to Sebastian. It's clear that Ciel knows and understands that he has nothing left to lose by doing so. Strong and determined for such a young boy, but going through a literal hell as well, you can be only but so strong while keeping so much inside.
- ★ COURT ALLIANCE: SEELIE
{{LAWFUL NEUTRAL "Judge"}}
While devoted to the queen, and even tagged as 'The Queen's Lapdog', Ciel still chooses to go his own way as well, as if more using his status with the court, and nobility as stepping stones to move further and higher in his quest for revenge. Still, he holds the code of honor of the England Royal Family at a very high honor - to a point that it's made him more enemies than friends. While Ciel is very honorable, at the same time it's easy to say that he will stop at nothing to get where he wants, even if it means harming those he sees deserving of punishment, at times, this coming down even on the innocent, if he believes in his mind, they do not apply.
It's very easy to say that he is caught in the middle ground of Good and Evil, Right and Wrong. Some might say he knows exactly what he is doing, and understanding that his wrongs are wrongs, and the evils are evil... while others could easily debate against this.
However, Ciel is very good on his word, as loyal as they come - to those that are deserving. Family is everything and will not be betrayed. He is every possible word of a Lawful Neutral, from reliable and orderly to structured and rigid.
He is very strategic and will use the situation to work to his own advantage, whether it be good, or bad. This is where when it comes to being a Lawful Neutral, Ciel sins in terms of going against 'commandments'. He has lied, murdered, killed innocent (albeit, by the hands of his butler, he was the one to give the commands- without second thought). Ciel does not always put others before him, but rather think about what will best benefit him, and then choose the path best paved.
- ★ ABILITIES:
Aside from being able to summon Sebastian at any given point in time, whenever needed by the sealing contract on his right eye, Ciel is an 'average' young boy. No insanely crazy abilities here, unless you count that he can go from 1-10 in seconds on the scale of tiny and angry.
